I have a quail farm. In the early weeks of production, quails have been found dead from cannibalism, what is the solution to prevent this? What's more, I have reduced the light intensity, increased the amount of feed, and adjusted the density of the cage. Are there any Medion products that can be used to overcome this?
Answer:
Dear. Mr. Wahid, thank you for the question. Cannibalism is the nature of pecking fellow birds preserved in a colony. The death rate from cannibalism is greater when the Quail begins to lay eggs (6 weeks of age). Quails usually often Peck other quails or even their own eggs.
In general, cannibalism is caused by two things, namely the influence of the nature of the Quail itself (genotype) and the influence of the environment (feed, temperature, stimulation of other Quail). Cannibal traits that already exist in Quail will arise if environmental factors support it, for example with the size of the beak of a quail is relatively small then the most suitable ration is ration type mash (flour), however if you are given a specific type or crumble will cause quail to experience stress and provoke cannibalism.
Cannibal quails can also be aroused by the blood-red color. If you see another injured Quail, it will trigger to peck the wound until severe. Deficiency of nutrients such as Ca and vitamin D, which play an important role in the formation of egg shells, can cause the resulting shells to be thin and flabby so they are easy to crack and eventually stimulate quails to peck their eggs.
In terms of management such as density and high temperature, lack of feed and drinking water, and late feeding time will also trigger cannibalism in Quail. So you should eliminate these factors such as adjusting the density of the cage, providing rations and drinking water according to nutritional needs and adjusting the comfort of quail to the environment. In an effort to reduce the intensity of light that hits the Quail's eyes can also be assisted by the installation paranet in the direction of the light.
Because the father has done it and still felt less, can also be done at the beginning of the maintenance program beak cut as a last resort considering this action is not commonly done among Quail breeders. This cutting can be done on Quail aged 21-24 days or a period grower with consideration of easy to hold, already familiar with the ration and drinking water long enough. Beak cutting is approximately 10% in the lower half and 8% in the upper half. With proper technique and handling, you will get a blunt beak and not grow back.
Before doing the beak cut, make sure the quail is in good health. To reduce the stress caused by cutting the beak, Quail children should be given vitamins through drinking water. Vitamin administration is carried out for three consecutive days, namely the day before cutting, the day when cutting, and the day after cutting. Next, you should check the condition of the quail chicks after cutting the beak.
The quality and quantity of the ration must be given in accordance with the nutritional needs of each phase of Quail rearing. Quail cubs aged 1-10 days should be given in the form of mash to be easy to eat. After more than ten days of age, quail chicks can be given fine-grained feed. In addition to the ration, it is no less important to note that drinking water should be given as needed. Maintain water quality and disinfect drinking water regularly using Desinsep.
If found quail are still alive and injured by pecking can be treated using CIL or Anti Pick or Neo Antisep applied to the wound. Give Quail Vitanak to cope with stress and help the growth of Quail offspring. In addition, when the quails have entered the production period, they can be given Quail Medi Egg or Egg Stimulant.
But keep in mind, giving multivitamins to Quail should be in accordance with the needs. Excessive administration of vitamins will cause the level of aggressiveness of quails to increase so that it can trigger the emergence of cannibalistic traits.
