Handle Livestock Injuries From The Start

Table of Contents

Farm animals such as cows, goats, sheep are easily injured especially if maintenance or treatment is not done properly. For example, injured while in cages, on grazing land or in transportation. Sometimes farmers only realize their livestock have injuries when they are severe. Injuries to livestock that are left alone and not treated immediately will certainly cause losses, such as:

  • The wound gets worse and becomes infected or becomes a nest of maggots
  • Difficult to cure
  • Injuries to the legs can cause the cattle to limp
  • Deterioration in the quality of livestock (defective livestock)
  • In severe cases cattle may become emaciated
  • Cattle skins damaged so that the price of livestock decreased

Treatment of injuries to livestock

Actions that need to be taken immediately by farmers if they know that their livestock is injured include:

  • Clean the wound with clean water to avoid infection. If necessary mix antiseptics such as Antisep to clean the wound.
  • Observe the wound whether there are maggots or not. If there are maggots, immediately remove the maggots using tweezers until clean.
  • Spray Dicodine on the surface of the wound to accelerate wound healing and prevent flies attached to the wound that can cause the development of maggots or so-called myasisPerform these steps regularly every day until the wound is dry.

Occurrence of maggots in Indonesia

One of the effects if the wound on livestock is left is that it can become a nest of maggots or fly larvae which are often called myasis. This disease is often found in tropical countries including Indonesia. Case myasis in Indonesia, it is still quite high. To date, the case myasis still a serious threat to areas of high livestock populations such as in South Sulawesi and East Sumba. Other cases were also reported in Sumbawa, Lombok Island, Kediri, Yogyakarta and Bali even the prevalence rate in the Minahasa region reached 20% (Balitvet, 2005). Lee (2002) noted the myasis in endemic areas it reaches 95%. This condition is closely related to the number of fly populations myasis. Areas with lots of trees and bushes or areas close to rivers are strategic places for the survival of flies myasis. Current Cases of myasis which occurs in Indonesia caused by larval infestation Chrysomya bezziana or mixed with Sarcophaga sp. Current Cases of myasis often occurs in the mother after childbirth (40.70%) and myasis navel in her child (27.64%). myasis due to injuries in the neck (6.53%), legs (6.03%), random (5.03%), muzzle (5.03%), tail (3.02) and horns (2.01%) as well as injuries in the eyes, udder, thighs and testicles (0.5%) (Balitvet, 2005).

Maggot Control

The occurrence of maggots on farms can be controlled by applying several measures, such as:

  • Control flies around the cage by paying attention to the cleanliness of the cage and the environment. If a lot of adult flies are found around the cage, the breeder can give flytox and Delatrin anti-fly drugs.

  • Supervision of livestock traffic also needs to be considered because it will potentially transmit the disease. Especially from areas that have long and many occurrences of maggots.

  • Immediately carry out treatment if it is known that there are injuries to livestock. For example, with wound sprays and deterrents myasis Dicodine.
