Questions from Mr. Winton

Blitar-East Java

To vaccinate AI via injection with a population of 100 animals, what is needed? For example, is the vaccine used the same as the vaccine used for drinking water? What are the mixtures and for one chicken what is the dosage?

Answer :

Dear. Mr. Winton, thank you for your question. Vaccines Medivac AI it is an inactivated vaccine in the form of an emulsion, in which the vaccine virus has been killed but can still bully the formation of antibodies. Medivac AI given to chickens by injection intramuscularly (through the meat/muscle) in the thigh / chest or subcutaneously (under the skin) in the lower back of the neck.

In vaccinating using inactivated vaccines by injection, the injection can adjust to the age of the chicken. Subcutaneous injection application can be done in chicks, while intramuscular injection can be done in adult chickens.

Before vaccinating there are several things that need to be considered, namely:

1. Equipment preparation

  • In carrying out vaccination, the equipment used is Alat Suntik Socorex (ASS) which is an automatic syringe for chicken vaccination, in addition to using ASS, if vaccination is carried out for a small population of chickens, the injection can use disposable syringe steril. Before using the syringe, it is necessary to sterilize the syringe including the syringe by cooking in boiling water for 30 minutes (counting after the water starts to boil).
  • Make sure the needles are still sharp and prepare spare needles.
  • The use of syringes, especially needles during non-sterile injection vaccinations, can cause inflammation of the injection site. Damage to the syringe also affects the accuracy/uniformity of the dose received by the chicken.

2. Bringing vaccines to the farm

Examination of the condition of the vaccine that we will bring to the location of the cage needs to be done. Make sure the vaccine is of good quality. In addition, when bringing the vaccine to the farm location, the vaccine conditions must be the same as the vaccine storage conditions, namely at temperatures of 2-8°C and avoid direct sunlight because vaccines that are not stored at these temperatures will be damaged. To prevent this, the vaccine needs to be carried using cooler box or an ice flask to maintain the temperature at 2-8°C.

3. Preparation for starting vaccination

Thawing or the process of gradually increasing the temperature of the vaccine becomes a preparatory process before vaccination. Purpose thawing is to condition the temperature of the vaccine which was previously 2-8°C close to the body temperature of the chicken (41°C) by grasping until the vaccine does not feel cold anymore, which is around 25-27°C. Thawing this is done to prevent chicken stress due to sudden changes in temperature and so that the vaccine is completely absorbed in the chicken's body.

Before starting vaccination, we also need to make sure the condition of the chickens to be vaccinated is healthy. If it is indicated that the chicken is sick, the vaccination schedule should be postponed and immediately deal with the symptoms that arise.

Doses given for vaccination Medivac AI each small chicken is 0.2 ml while for adult chickens 0.5 ml. If the chicken population is 100 heads, then the vaccine needs are :

for small chickens 0.2 ml x 100 heads = 20 ml

for adult chickens 0.5 ml x 100 heads = 50 ml

Currently available AI vaccine with the smallest packaging 25 ml (Medivac AI 25 ml), so it can be given to 100 small chickens or in adult chickens can use 2 bottles Medivac AI 25 ml.
