Why did my recently vaccinated duckling die right away? Is it because of the wrong injection or the wrong needle size? What steps should be taken so that the surviving ducklings can be helped?

Answer:

Dear. Mr. Lilik, thank you for the question. Basically, the vaccine does not cause death in vaccinated animals if the conditions for vaccination have been met include materials, methods, Mileu/ environment, and Human (4M). When vaccination is carried out, the ducklings must be in good health. If the duck is in a sick condition due to illness plus high stress factors, it can be a trigger for death.

Mishandling or engineering can lead to vaccination failure. Errors in injecting when not done carefully and according to the procedure can cause twisted neck, abscess (swelling) of the neck or paralysis of the legs. As a result, Ducks become stressed and susceptible to disease.

In vaccinating via injection, it must be ensured that the vaccine actually enters the target site both subcutaneously (under the skin) and intramuscularly (chest muscles/thigh muscles). Vaccine administration by intramuscular route is injected into the chest muscles and thigh muscles with a needle direction in accordance with the direction of the chest muscle fibers and thigh muscles. The needle should not be too deep to prevent the tissue under the muscle from being pierced.

Subcutaneous application is done by pulling the skin of the neck behind the bottom using the index finger and thumb first, then the syringe is inserted under the skin fold. To make sure whether the vaccine is right under the skin or not, you can see the injection marks, then the vaccine injected will appear white under the skin. When you're using Socorex Syringes, suitable needle sizes for vaccination in Ducks are 0.7 mm or 0.9 mm in diameter and 13 mm in length.

For the treatment of ducks that are still alive, it is necessary to double-check to find the cause of death of the duck, if due to mishandling vaccinations can be given multivitamins to reduce the stress level of ducks.

However, if the duck is attacked by the disease can be done several things as follows:

  1. Perform selection and isolation if there are ducks that show clinical symptoms to avoid transmission.
  2. Give antibiotics in accordance with the accuracy of the diagnosis when the duck is sick. Antibiotics that can be used such as Proxan-SNeo Meditril or Therapy.
  3. For sick ducks that are not yet severe, do monitor antibody titer to see the formation of antibody titer.
  4. Give multivitamins such as Fortevit or Vita Stress to restore stamina after vaccination.
  5. Spray the cage regularly with disinfectants such as Neo Antisep or Antisep, disinfection of cage equipment, feeding and drinking places with Medisep, and drinking water sanitation uses Desinsep.

In order for the vaccination to be successful and optimally form immunity, you should pay attention to the following points when vaccinating:

  1. Do not use the vaccine if the vial is cracked, the seal is broken or has expired.
  2. Ducks to be vaccinated must be in good health. If ducks are attacked by bacterial diseases, treatment should be carried out first.
  3. Perform the vaccination technique according to the procedure appropriately and make sure the syringe to be used is sterile.
  4. Make sure each tail gets the same and uniform dose. When vaccinating, avoid rough treatment that causes Ducks stress. Not in a hurry to vaccinate to prevent misdiagnosed or unvaccinated Ducks.
  5. Three days before and after vaccination, give vitamins such as Vita Stress or immunostimulants from natural ingredients such as Imustim to improve the functioning of the immune system and optimal body resistance.
